People move. Towards Wi-Fi. When arriving somewhere new, the first question is no longer “Where am I?” but “Is there Wi-Fi?”
Electronic devices are warm. People now look for Wi-Fi instead of a bonfire. They gather around Wi-Fi. Perhaps out of fear that too many will gather, some lock it away with a password, building a kind of fence. Unprotected Wi-Fi invites anyone and everyone.
In this way, the internet has become both the most isolating force for individuals and the only means of bringing isolated individuals together. Around it, Wi-Fi routers draw people in like bonfires on a cold day. There’s something running through it that sits between the primitive and the modern.
At first, the internet seemed full of possibilities: a whole new space that enriches the world. A space where many people could bring many different thoughts together. But now that the internet has become the only form of community in this world, where are those new thoughts and influences? Like any isolated community, it’s difficult to find anything new. On the surface it may appear rich, but most of us still visit the same sites every day, speak to the same people, and read the same ideas.
Yet sometimes we encounter something slightly different within the internet world. These feel like traces of lives that sit outside the censorship of contemporary existence. This exhibition gathers all these traces, without distinction between artists and non-artists. It invites people in through the promise of free Wi-Fi. We will make a bonfire.
사람들은 이동한다. 와이파이가 있는 곳으로. 새로운 곳에 도착했을 때, 가장 먼저 하는 질문은 이제 “여기가 어디에요?”가 아니라 “와이파이 있어요?”이다.
전자기기는 따뜻하다. 이제 사람들은 모닥불 대신 와이파이를 찾는다. 와이파이 주위에는 사람들이 모인다. 너무 많은 사람들이 모일 것을 염려해서일까. 누군가는 암호를 걸어 울타리를 치기도 한다. 암호 없는 와이파이는 불특정 다수를 초대한다.
그리하여 인터넷은 개인들을 가장 고립시키면서, 고립된 개인들을 묶는 유일한 수단이 되었다. 그 속에서 와이파이 공유기는 추운 날 모닥불처럼 사람들을 끌어 모은다. 원시적인 것과 현대적인 것을 관통하는 무엇이 그 안에 들어있다.
한편, 처음 인터넷은 수많은 가능성들로 가득 차 보였다. 세상을 더 풍요롭게 하는 새로운 공간. 수많은 사람들이 수많은 다른 생각들을 가져와 함께 하는 공간. 그러나 인터넷이 이 세상에 존재하는 유일한 커뮤니티인 지금, 새로운 생각과 영향들은 어디에 있는가? 여느 고립된 커뮤니티들과 마찬가지로 새로움을 찾아보기는 힘들다. 겉으로는 다양해보이나, 우리는 대부분 매일 똑같은 사이트를 방문하고 비슷한 사람들과 대화하고 비슷한 생각들을 읽지 않는가.
그러나 때때로 우리는 인터넷 속에서 조금 다른 것들을 마주한다. 이는 현대적 삶의 검열 밖에 있는 사람들의 흔적과도 같다. 본 전시는 작가와 비작가의 경계없이 이 모든 흔적들을 끌어 모은다. 그리고 무료 와이파이를 통해 사람들을 부른다. 우리는 모닥불을 만들 것이다.
