Egon Altdorf was a German sculptor, printmaker, stained-glass artist and poet. In 1952, he won a prize in an international competition with a theme of the ‘Unknown Political Prisoner’. During this time, he had the opportunity to meet some of Britain’s most talented sculptors, including Henry Moore, Eduardo Paolozzi, Lynn Chadwick and Reg Butler. This encounter played a pivotal role in reshaping his artistic style from figurative to abstract.
In this film, his son Dorian Crone remembers his father and shares his thoughts about Altdorf’s artworks. “I think it has a sense of hope and forward movement. His early work was a bit darker but as he moved on in life, he reached out for the light.”
